Police Department

Mission

It shall be the mission of the Town of Hyde Park Police Department to provide the highest level of professional police service to those who live, visit, work in, or travel through our community. We will protect life and property, enforce laws, maintain order, and promote individual responsibility and community commitment. We aim to safeguard the rights of our citizens as well as our police officers and will do so with courage, honesty, discretion, and sound judgment.

Police Staff

The Police Department provides full-time police coverage to the residents of the Town of Hyde Park. The staff consists of 16 full-time Police Officers, 11 part-time Officers, 4 full-time Police Assistants (Dispatchers), and 5 part-time Police Assistants (Dispatchers).

Community

The Police Department provides safety and security to over 21,000 town residents and their property. In addition, contained within the Town of Hyde Park are such notable areas as:

  • Culinary Institute of America
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt Estate and Library
  • Norrie Point State Park
  • Ogden Mills Mansion
  • Vanderbilt Mansion


Shares Responsibility

The Department also shares responsibility for the security of the county's E911 facility, the Hudson River Psychiatric Center and the New York State Emergency Management Center. The Department works closely with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, the New York State Police and the National Park Service, not only during large-scale and serious incidents but also on an everyday basis.

Areas of Patrol

The Department patrols an area of approximately 37.6 square miles that include approximately 167 miles of town roads. The Town of Hyde Park Police Department is responsible for patrolling large sections of State Routes 9 and 9G, and actively enforces vehicle and traffic laws. 

Working with Youth

The Department also has a full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) at FDR High School who works closely with the Town's youth. 

Training

A number of officers are trained in juvenile investigation, sex crimes investigation, accident investigation, and crime scene/evidence processing. The Department has a state certified polygraph examiner, who is called upon by other local police agencies. Several officers are certified child safety restraint technicians and provide assistance upon request.

A large number of the officers in the Department are town residents, having been born and raised here and having attended Hyde Park schools. The members of the Police Department look forward to working with the community and continuing to provide professional police services to those who live and work in the Town of Hyde Park.
